Webex Echo and Robotic Audio: Separate Diseases, Separate Cures

Diagnose before touching settings: echo (hearing voices again) is acoustics — speakers reaching a live mic, cured with headphones and one-audio-per-room. Robotic, underwater audio is starvation — network packets late or CPU frames missed — cured by wiring the connection and unloading the machine. The fixes don't overlap, so the diagnosis is half the repair.

1. For echo: close the loop

  1. Identify the open-speakers desk — the participant who never hears the echo everyone else does.
  2. Headphones there, or mute-when-not-speaking discipline.
  3. One room, several joined devices? Exactly one keeps audio.
Why this works: echo needs playback loud enough to re-enter a mic; remove the playback from the air (headphones) or the extra endpoints, and the loop physically cannot form.

2. For echo on your side: align devices and mode

  1. Settings → Audio: same headset for mic and speakers where possible.
  2. Check Smart Audio isn't in Music mode — it relaxes processing, echo protection included.
  3. Desk speakers non-negotiable? Low volume, long mic distance, reflexive muting.
Why this works: the canceller models the delay between its own output and the mic's input — matched devices keep the model stable, and Music mode deliberately loosens its grip.

3. For robotic audio: feed the pipeline

  1. Wire the network, or move to clean line-of-sight Wi-Fi; pause downloads and sync.
  2. Kill your video for sixty seconds — voice recovering confirms bandwidth as the constraint.
  3. Task Manager / Activity Monitor: end whatever pins the CPU during calls; old machines feel Webex's own processing too.
Why this works: voice frames are deadline-bound; late-or-missed frames get papered over by the codec, and the paper sounds like a robot. Both starvations produce the identical symptom, so check both.
