Google Meet Mic Not Working: Clear the Gates in Order

Meet lives in a browser, so two gates stack: the site permission (lock/tune icon in the address bar → allow Microphone for meet.google.com) and the OS permission for the browser itself (Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone; Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → your browser). Clear both, pick the right device under ⋮ → Settings → Audio, and check you're not simply muted — Ctrl+D / ⌘+D toggles.

1. Gate one: the site permission

On meet.google.com, click the lock / tune icon left of the URL.
Set Microphone to Allow.
Reload the tab and rejoin.

Why this works: one reflexive 'Block' click months ago persists forever — the prompt never re-offers itself. The blocked-mic icon in the address bar is the tell.

2. Gate two: the OS permission for the browser

Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone → access on, browser allowed.

Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → enable your browser, then fully quit and reopen it.

Why this works: this gate outranks anything a website can request — with it closed, Meet's own permission is moot. It's the standard reason the mic 'works in the Zoom app but not in Meet'.

3. Pick the device and prove it

⋮ → Settings → Audio → Microphone dropdown — select your hardware by name.
Speak; the level indicator should track you. Flat? Next device on the list.
Still flat everywhere: check the physical mute — headset booms and inline switches mute upstream of software.

Why this works: webcams and dongles all register mics and steal defaults; explicit selection ends the roulette, and hardware mutes are invisible to every meter.

4. Confirm you're not just muted

Toolbar mic icon red-slashed = muted; Ctrl+D (Win) / ⌘+D (Mac) toggles.
Host-muted? You'll need to unmute yourself — hosts can only request, not force.
Rejoin after fixing; Meet renegotiates devices on entry.

Why this works: meetings can join you muted by policy, and the fastest 'broken mic' fix in history remains pressing the unmute shortcut.

Works in another browser? Reset the first browser's site permissions for meet.google.com.
Corporate machine? Endpoint policy may block browser mic wholesale — that's an IT ticket.
