Webex Background Noise Removal: The Right Smart Audio Mode
In the Webex App: Settings → Audio → Webex smart audio, three modes: Noise removal (the default — strips all detected background noise), Optimize for all voices (conference rooms: removes noise but keeps every voice around the mic), and Music mode (fidelity for performances — and the classic cause of 'Webex stopped filtering'). Most complaints trace to being in the wrong mode, not a broken filter.
1. Confirm Noise removal is the active mode
- Open the Webex App → Settings → Audio.
- Find Webex smart audio.
- Select Noise removal; it applies before and during meetings alike.
2. Know when the other two modes are correct
- Optimize for all voices — shared-room mode: colleagues at the table shouldn't be filtered as 'background speech'.
- Music mode — lessons and performances: preserves what Noise removal would eat. Leaving it on afterwards is the top accidental-noise complaint.
Right mode, noise persists?
Running Meet on Mondays and Webex on Thursdays means two settings screens — or one Krisp underneath both. One filter, both directions, every app; free plan first, decide later.
One filter for both apps Krisp with Meet & Webex — the full picture →3. Mind the join-method differences
- Desktop app: full Smart Audio selector — prefer it for important calls.
- Browser joins: noise removal runs by default in Chrome, Edge and Firefox; Safari support has historically needed enablement.
- Phone-call audio: Webex can also scrub noise arriving from the far end — find the incoming-noise option in Audio settings if callers' environments plague you.
Still stuck?
- Colleagues filtered out in a shared room? That's Noise removal working; switch to all-voices mode.
- Music sounding destroyed? Same story inverted — Music mode for the session.
- Noise persists in the right mode? Mic placement and gain next; filters rescue, physics prevents.
Quick answers
Does Webex clean audio in both directions?
Your Smart Audio mode governs what you send; a separate option can remove background noise from the other end of phone calls — worth enabling for support and sales roles.
Why is Smart Audio missing when I join from a browser?
Browser joins carry default noise removal in the major browsers but not the full mode picker — that lives in the desktop app.
