Google Meet Noise Cancellation: Turning It On (and Why Yours Might Be Missing)

On the join screen or mid-call: More options (⋮) → Settings → Audio → Noise cancellation — a single toggle, applied live. Can't find it? That's the tier system, not a bug: Meet's cancellation ships with certain Google Workspace editions, and many free personal accounts don't include the toggle at all. It removes non-speech noise — typing, doors, rustling — and deliberately keeps voices, television included.

1. Flip it in the green room

Open your meeting link; pause on the join screen.
More options (⋮) → Settings → Audio tab.
Switch Noise cancellation on and close.

Why this works: the join screen uses the exact permissions and devices the meeting will — setting it here means entering the call already filtered, and the choice persists per device.

2. Or mid-call, when the drilling starts

Meeting controls → ⋮ → Settings → Audio.
Toggle Noise cancellation; it applies to your outgoing stream immediately.
Watch the ring around your self-view voice indicator — it visualises sound being caught.

Why this works: the toggle is live-applied, and that indicator ring is Meet's built-in proof: type a burst and watch activity register that participants never hear.

3. Understand the tier gate before troubleshooting it

Included: business and education Workspace editions, Workspace Individual.
Commonly absent: free personal Google accounts.
Admin-controlled: on managed domains, availability and defaults follow admin console policy.

Why this works: knowing it's account-gated saves the classic wasted hour of reinstalling browsers hunting a toggle your plan doesn't ship. If the tier says no, the fix is a different layer, not a different browser.

4. On mobile, same feature, shorter path

In-call, tap the screen → ⋮ menu → Settings.
Tap Noise cancellation on.
Expect modestly higher battery drain on older phones — the processing is real.

Why this works: the mobile clients run the same speech-vs-noise separation; the toggle simply lives one menu shallower.

Quick answers

Why is there no noise cancellation toggle in my Meet?

Almost always account tier — the feature ships with certain Workspace editions and Workspace Individual; many free accounts lack it. On work domains an admin may also have disabled it.

Does Meet's cancellation remove a TV in the background?

No — Google is explicit that voices, including broadcast voices, pass through. It targets typing, doors, construction: non-speech noise.
